This therapeutic approach is little bit different than other approaches that we discuss on our website. That is because experiential therapy is not just one therapeutic approach, but rather a category of therapy that includes a multitude of different techniques and strategies. Regardless of the specific method, we place a great deal of emphasis on experiential therapy, as the girls at Trinity Teen use the ranch and wilderness around them as experiential contexts that provide insights about their own behaviors, solutions, and attitudes.

What is experiential therapy?

The concept of experiential therapy was developed in the 1970’s as a way to use real-life experiences and place the patient in a real physical situation that forces them to address their own behaviors and reactions. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including equine therapy, artistic expression therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dynamic therapy, Gestalt therapy, and even musical therapy.

How does experiential therapy work?

For our ranch, we use the nature that is all around us to provide girls with a way to get outside of their own heads and get a tangible hold of how their behavior affects other people, as well as themselves. One particular way that we do this is with animal therapy methods, which teach girls about working with another living creature and caring for it. We believe that using nature as the basis for experiential therapy gives these troubled girls more balance in their lives, and helps them be closer to God.

What makes experiential therapy an effective therapeutic approach?

We believe that the “experience” aspects of experiential therapy have a deep impact on the mind of teenage girls. Experiential therapy helps make the new skills they learn more tangible, and less about intellectualizing the very real issues that are affecting their lives. Experiential therapy has a profound focus on change, personal responsibility and empowerment, and lasting emotional growth and improvement, and that makes it one of the most powerful ideals in the therapy world today, regardless of the specific method that you use.
