Depression in children is a disorder that affects many teenagers. It could be described as a feeling of sadness. Most of us feel this way at one time or another and for short periods of time. But, true depression in teenagers is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness interfere with everyday life. These feelings can lead to loss of self-worth, discouragement, and loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed.
Depression and Sadness may be caused by Chemical changes
Researchers believe that depression in adolescents may be caused by chemical changes in the brain. However, they do not know the exact cause. Some professionals believe it may be initiated by stressful events, such as the death of a friend or relative, drug abuse, violence, a bad breakup, unemployment or missed opportunities for independence. Others believe it may be a gene problem and It is probably a combination of both, as well as other issues. It is well known amongst professionals that teen girls get depressed more often than teen boys and many of them respond to depression in different ways. Sometimes the regular process of maturing often triggers sadness, while others simply display a depressed mood, have low self-esteem and are very critical of themselves.
Therapeutic intervention through residential treatment centers are designed to move teenagers through a complete healing process. First, from assessment; second, through treatment in healing root issues, healthy living, relationship repair and spiritual awareness, third, to the transition back home, where families can enjoy restoration and children can enjoy success and happiness.
